Over recent months, Windows Insider Program members have been previewing features and builds for Windows 10 21H1. However, Microsoft never said what these previews were for, other than a future update. It was a strange move because most knew the previews would eventually become Windows 10 21H1. Microsoft usually announces when previews will reach end users, so it’s unusual for the company not to offer an official reveal until this close to release. The latest platform upgrade for Windows 10 is part of Microsoft’s twice-yearly update schedule. In fact, the company is already previewing 21H2 features although has yet to make that build official. Microsoft has been discussing this latest update as a Windows 10X release, it’s new modular variant of the platform.

Now the company has officially said the update will also cover existing Windows 10 SKUs. In a post related to the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program, Microsoft discusses version 21H1. It is worth noting Microsoft is not changing any hardware certification during this update cycle. In fact, the documentation is almost identical to that of version 20H2, albeit with 21H1 replacing the previous build number. Some of the major changes coming with Windows 10 21H1 include custom install options, a storage monitoring tool, a new voice typing experience, and a desktop News Feed widget. Windows 10X, which will ship with version 21H1 will bring its own unique abilities, such as the ability to seamless switch between multiple screens and different form factors.
